Commentary on the Iran VS Portugal game of the world cup 2006 in Germany
MONgholaa!
Iranian soccer team is just not improving. It´s drying up and fading away!
I went to Frankfurt to see Iran play versus Portugal. Iran lost 2-0, but could
have been 3-0. In the stadium, because you dont hear the tv presenter, it felt
like 3-0. There seamed to be a goal at the very, which I guess didnt count.
Imagine all the sacrifices involved in getting there from Spain. In
Frankfurt there were slightly more Portuguese fans than iranian fans.
I was carrying this huge "shir
va khorshid" iranian flag. Many iranians have seamed to accept the
"allah o akbar" flag as the iranian flag, which is dissapointing. Im
sure they were carrying the "allah o akbar" flag, just because its
easier to find than the "shir va khorshid" flag, but they should do an
effort and use the lion and sun flag.
It was a cute experience being at the stadium. It looks much smaller than what
it looks like on TV. I cheered and cheered for Iran so loud that a
japanese tourist sitting infront of me, would look back every five minutes. However, in the second half and after Portugals goal, I stopped cheering.
All the clapping, all the cheering, all the traveling to a foreign
country, all the spending, and then in return, the guys of the
Iranian team don´t even want to run or make an effort. What are these
iranians thinking? They didnt want to attack! They would have the ball
and they would just stand there. It was unbelievable. When they were
losing 2 zero, it looked like they were in no rush. In fact, instead
of the portuguese players waisting time, it was the iranian players
waisting time! Iran's team had no defined game or a plan to win the game.
No ideas, no game plan, cant even pass a ball correctly!
It's Iran's 3rd world cup, and its about time they show some improvement. The US team has shown improvements, so have the teams from Africa!

The iranian goalkeeper is a joke! Really! He made the same mistake as the
mistake that caused Mexico´s second goal, again! Unbelievable. You
would have thought that after the disaster against Mexico he would be
telling himself never to carelessly shoot the ball like that. When
the game between Iran and Portugal ended, two of Irans players,
clapped towards the crowd. Like saying thank you. Well, you are not
welcome, you dont deserve so much love, if you dont want to run and
try!
They didnt seam to have a plan for winning. They want to play for 0-0
results all their lives!
They do have a responsibiliy, because they represent the whole
poplulation of a country and region!
That same eavening, not only USA equalized with Italy 1-1 with only 9
players, but also GHANA won 2-0 over the Czeck Republic! And look,
Ghana, its their first world cup! And yes, they played to win!
Later on that same day, team USA equaliyed 1-1 with Italy. This is
such an achievement considering that team USA was playing with only 9
players, due to two unfair red cards. Italy was playing with 12;
eleven players plus the referee. At the end of the day, I felt proud
of the americans, and felt suddenly more american. After all Im a US
citizen! I wanted to go and celebrate
with the american fans in Frankfurt. Next time I go to the worldcup,
It will be to cheer the US team. At least they run and make an effort.
Despite Iran losing 2-0, iranians were celebrating in the streets of Frankfurt.
Iran, Iran chants all along. When I would cross by, I would answer:
Jam kon baabaa, baakhti!! I didnt want to hear Iran Iran chants anymore.
It is embarrassing given the teams results. Keep the cheering for
when they play well. I find iranians a bit dilusional!! They seam to
loose touch with reality really quick! Slightly embarrasing. And these Iranians dont
mind that Iran lost, again, 2-0!!
Anyway, Ive taken off the white clothes, and now Im dressed in Red and
Yellow, the colors of my other country, Spain, which I´ll be cheering
tommorow, here in Stuttgart.
