![]() | Dario's Top 4 Favorite India / Punjab Songs Listdariointernet.com Summary: |
Every time I travel to a new country that has an interesting musical culture, I also investigate their pop music. This you can see clearly in Dario's selection of the 600 Best songs ever, which is very internationally oriented and not so anglo/american like lists by most vulgar music reviewers.
When I visited Turkey, I made myself interested in their music and discovered artists like Erkin Koray. When I visited Greece, I involved myself and discovered artists like Paxalis Terzis which regular people in western Europe and US have never heard of. When I visited Egypt I discovered music by Libanese artist Ragheb Alama who has amazingly elaborate productions.
Now that I was going to visit India I had to learn about music in India. I discovered some good stuff, which I list here for you, but was also a bit disappointed. First of all, regarding Hindi music, it is difficult to discover artists. This is because their music is focused on Bollywood soundtracks and therefore the albums are all multi performer soundtracks. Therefore the artist / singer takes a back seat and doesn't fully develop. I'm also not a big fan of high pitched falsetto female voices like Lata Mangeshkar or Asha Bhosle. Then there is music from Punjab in Northern India. I realized I liked their music much more. They are more artist oriented. The only problem with them, which are Sikh, is that they seam to be male dominated and focused. Hardly any women. Or the women only do single tracks and backing vocals.
So anyway, after much thought, I've chosen my 4 favorite India / Punjab songs. You should appreciate this since it was difficult to discover these 4 gems among so much rubbish. What they have in common is that they are all:
- Elegant
- Medium speed 100 BPM to 120 BPM , neither sleepy nor miky mousey
- Have good Tabla percussion
- Have string section (violins..)
- Are not cover versions and also have good vocalists
- Must have some regional local flavour to it. Pure western pop is not accepted.
