Dario's Top 4 Favorite India / Punjab Songs List

Dario's Top 4 Favorite

India / Punjab Songs List

dariointernet.com

Summary:

Every time I travel to a new country that has an interesting musical culture, I also investigate their pop music. This you can see clearly in Dario's selection of the 600 Best songs ever, which is very internationally oriented and not so anglo/american like lists by most vulgar music reviewers.

When I visited Turkey, I made myself interested in their music and discovered artists like Erkin Koray. When I visited Greece, I involved myself and discovered artists like Paxalis Terzis which regular people in western Europe and US have never heard of. When I visited Egypt I discovered music by Libanese artist Ragheb Alama who has amazingly elaborate productions.

Now that I was going to visit India I had to learn about music in India. I discovered some good stuff, which I list here for you, but was also a bit disappointed. First of all, regarding Hindi music, it is difficult to discover artists. This is because their music is focused on Bollywood soundtracks and therefore the albums are all multi performer soundtracks. Therefore the artist / singer takes a back seat and doesn't fully develop. I'm also not a big fan of high pitched falsetto female voices like Lata Mangeshkar or Asha Bhosle. Then there is music from Punjab in Northern India. I realized I liked their music much more. They are more artist oriented. The only problem with them, which are Sikh, is that they seam to be male dominated and focused. Hardly any women. Or the women only do single tracks and backing vocals.

So anyway, after much thought, I've chosen my 4 favorite India / Punjab songs. You should appreciate this since it was difficult to discover these 4 gems among so much rubbish. What they have in common is that they are all:

- Elegant

- Medium speed 100 BPM to 120 BPM , neither sleepy nor miky mousey

- Have good Tabla percussion

- Have string section (violins..)

- Are not cover versions and also have good vocalists

- Must have some regional local flavour to it. Pure western pop is not accepted.

Dario in India - Day 1 & 2

My india experience has finally started. The airplane arrived in Delhi and the first bumppy part of the trip started. I had planned to sleep in the airport before taking a local flight in the morning. But one quick look at the minusculous, noisy, fully lit arrival hall, I realized that I needed to figure a plan B really quickly.
Which took me to sleep at a slightly overpriced hotel YMCA Triangle Family Hostal.

The only interesting thing was that from the hotel window the view was on a Sikh temple which unfortunatelly was fully functional all night!!

dario in sikh temple yWca hostel

Next day I took a local flight. The Terminal 1B of their domestic airport is also minusculous and crowded. The whole airport domestic and international is a scary dusty mess. But the flight went well and I am now in Khajuraho, and the first beautiful part of the trip started.

Heres my picture in Khajuraho:

dario in khajuraho india

Yes a happy smile even on my face is possible, even thought the temples can easily be seen in 1 day. So dont listen to people that say you need two days.

The weather is nice. But obviously the temple area has no shades. The village of khajuraho, is really that: A village. You have pigs, cows and dogs running wild. It only has two streets and the turists are local indian tourist. Rather few white people.

Tommorow, more surprises. The trip already has some surprises, as a train ticket I booked a month in advance keeps showing me in Waiting List!! So I need to figure out plan B.

Part of a conversation with a music expert friend of mine giving me some advice on my trip to India

G.A.:
I once found an Iranian 78rpm in Delhi. The label was Young Iran . A label set up by a Parsi person in Bombay. They released a limited number of a string of 78rpm records in 1940s and faded away. These records were sold mainly in Iran, pressed in Bombay and exported mainly to Iran (the rest sold for Parsi interest in India. I'm sure you know that there used to be a strong Parsi minority in India).

Bargain Bin record hunters soar neck syndrome

 blow jobs bargain bin
Bargain bin record buyers soar neck syndrome

Summer is here!!!. After the harshest, nastiest winter in memory, the sun has shown it's face again here in Madrid.
I'm literally just wearing a t-shirt!.

All this reminds me of San Francisco

Being a vinyl record collector Height Street is one of the natural hangin' places for people like me.

Lot of these record collectors and dealers are into psychedelic music. Their record jackets reminded me of this postcard I save from when I used to live in the Bay Area:

 corner of heigh ashbury psychedelic

It's the psychedelic version of the Height and Ashbury corner

As you know Amoeba Records is on Height Stree. Which reminds me of one time that I had gone bargain record hunting there with my tall friend Bill. As you may know the bargain records and CD's are placed on the floor!! So that only us poor people have to bend. Anyway, the place was so large. I lost Bill and couldn't see him. Then I went to the Classical & Jazz room, and it looked empty. I say: "Bill"?? And he responds: I'm on isle 3 giving blow jobs!!!

bargain bin neck syndrome

Offcourse he was joking!! Ha Ha .. But this bending on both knees on the floor, is definitly the poor record buyers head & neck syndrome!!

List of India भारत गणराज्य Hindi / Punjabi Sounding Persian Songs with Tabla

gitti tablaA List of India भारत गणराज्य Hindi / Punjabi Sounding Persian Songs with Tabla

I'm preparing for my visit to India. Just yesterday I went for vaccination and received 4 shots, two in each arm, plus anti-malaria medicine that I will have to take during the trip.

So I am compiling the music I will take on my Walkman during the trip.

 persian music with tabla

Along with the indian material, I want to take with me some iranian pop with indian flavour.

For those of you who understand music, you know what I mean. Persian pop music with indian tabla percussion, mid range tempo 100BPM to 124 BPM. In other words, normal, non-miki mouse speed. Now I'm not being a purist, I know some of these are more "afghan" than "indian", but you get the idea. Here are some examples:

1. Soli - Negar (Ey yaar-e Man)

2. Googoosh - Man aamadeham

3. Nooshafain - Nazanin E Ashegh

4. Betti - Jodaee (on her new album)

5. Nelli - ki bood Ki bood

6. Gitti - Geryeh ( dokhtari dareh geryeh mikoneh )   LISTEN 0:50 Seconds نمونه
گیتی پاشایی‌ ‌ گریه دختری داره گریه میکنه منفردزاده Anyone has this one in high quality? Contact me.

7. Mehrpouya - Aseman Migeryad emshab. also his LP: Jambo Africa

8. Arash - Boro Boro

9. Mehrshad - Khaliband

10. Mansour - Doone doone

Do you know more that are not by the above artists?
