Mixing and Meshing RSS Feeds with feedity and yahoo pipes

Yahoo Pipes allows you to mix several RSS feeds together and also Mesh and mix with them images. You can aggregate web feeds, web pages and then publish them either on sites or as widgets. It has utilities that allow you to crop and filter the results and create a personalized mix. A pipe can be created that takes the RSS feed of a page and adds a photo to it from Flickr based on keywords.

There is a video tutorial available here.

Thre is also a site called Feedity.com that is supposed to help you create a feed for a site that does not have an RSS feed.

It didn't work too well for me, but I'll have to give it a try couple of more times. Warning: Feedity's front page is badly designed. It allows you to create feeds without registering. But surprise surprise, these feeds are then deleted within 30 days! Dum! Dum! Dum!

Update: Yahoo Pipes has turned out to be dissapointing to me. I couldn't really get it to do anything interesting. Not intuitive at all. For example I tried adding images to RSS entries and I couldnt figure out how its done. The video tutorial is outdated and the interface has changed. Basic steps like sorting and truncating must be performed manually and its not even clear how they are done.

LAAAIIMMM!! From the same fuckers that turned off geocities hosting without a free redirect or a free bulk download. Stay away from Yahoo. They are proven loosers.

Yahoo's Geocities hosting is closing

Back in 1999 I started my first attempt at a website as an assignment for the HTML authoring class I took at Evergreen Valley College in the Bay Area.

Since then, until 2004 many of the sites I created where hosted on geocities. The hosting had a long annoying vertical banner ad, only 15 Megabytes for files, and such limited bandwidth allowance that in those days before youTube, as soon as couple of people downloaded a video from the site, the bandwidth limit would be reached and geocities would shut down the site for 24 hours.

Despite that, one good thing it had ,was that it was highly reliable. Comparatively other hostings had a lot of down time. There were also menay small companies giving it a try at web site hosting, that would close within 6 months. So it wasn't so bad to be on geocities. Also a site on geocities would rank really high on Google searches.

Even though I stopped using geocities by 2004, I have many sites from that period and before that are still hosted there. They are sites that did not require updates, for example the one's I had for artists whose career ended a while back and don't require updates like: Lime, Dusty ,... etc. Or my own personal pictures that didn't need updates..

My hope was that archive.org or the internet way back machine would save a copy of the sites. However, that doesnt seam to save the old sites properly. The images are not saved, and it looks like it doesnt save beyond the front-page of the site.

Personally geocities closing is a big nuisance. Instead of putting my time in new updates, I have to put time in saving some of the material I had uploaded in the space of 6 years in geocities.

The guys at yahoo are extremely rude as well. No bulk downloading to save the files, no free redirecting either.

Couple of months ago Google announced it would close their original attempt at web site hosting. Causing lot of problems for me, which are not completely solved yet and will take a long time to fix.

The desappearnce of geocities sites is a big cultural loss to everyone, because lot of the vintage sites on the internet dating back to the late 90's were hosted on geocities as it was one of the only free hosting options that were available back then.

Back in the 80's extended mixes and 12" singles started to become popular. Remixes were somewhat similar to the original versions. But there where some remixers that had a unique production sound and became big names which many of us music lovers followed: Jellybean famous for his Bruce Springsteen mixes, Shep Pettibone probably the best remixer of the 80s, Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero who did mixes for Tears for Fears and Steve Winwood. Then you had those PWL remixes with their unique sounds at the end of the 80s.

The 90's was the Hayday of remixers. David Morales was the biggest name. I followed every remix by Steve Silk Hurley. Todd Terry and Frankie Knuckles. Then you had musically limited remixers that had a very unique sound that would butcher records into something powerful, hypnotic and surreal, for example, Florida's Murk. I also loved the jazz tinggled remixes of Masters at Work. In 1998 Filter house became popular.

By 1999 I stopped following new music altogether. Turned off the radio, stopped going to clubs, stopped following mix shows, stopped reading magazines, etc, etc, etc..My brain just could not absorb any more musical material. So I just had to shut the door to learning about any new artists.

In the decade that has gone by since then, I have bumped into the name Offer Nissim several times. The name is so interesting, as it is not one of those typically anglo names. I've seen the name on posters of club events and on sites like Perfect Beat. Still I refused to listen as I listen less and less to music these days. Gives me a headache.

But today I bumped into this video. It was mesmerizing. I guess the big deal is not just the music itself, its his movements and the expression of his face. It makes you feel excited about the music he is playing. BTW I didnt realize it was a man until I read the biography. Truely exciting. A must see:

Larger than life, Gloria Trevi wins over the crowd in Madrid

There are definitly artists that are larger than life and out of this planet. Mexico's Gloria Trevi is one of them. She won me over when in the early 90's I saw a clip of a live performance of her at Chile's Viña del Mar festival where she would cry and scream on stage.

Last night she performed in Madrid, and her mini-performance was so powerful that she made me feel suddenly alive again. The place was packed and people went absolutely crazy for her. Even those who didn't know who she was quickly realized that she's not an ordinary artist from the pack but a mega semi-god superstar.

And look, I've seen many artists on stage, including Michael Jackson who I saw in 1988 during his BAD tour. The concert was at the Vicente Calderon Football stadium. Michael was distant and was not able to establish any connection with the audience. Everything was pre recorded and as soon as he could he fled off the stage without an encore to get into his oxygen tent.

Now, back to Michael Jackson death subject matter, Micheal's death inadvertently ended up helping the murderous ayatollahs as it distracted international attention from the crimes they were committing against the Green protests going on in I-ran.

Regarding Michael Jackson's music, I liked his late 70's and early 80s period, starting from The Jacksons "Destiny" Lp in 1979 featuring the funky "Shake your Body down to the ground". I loved all those Rod Temperton songs of that period, like Rock with you. By the way, Rod Temperton was a white British mucician!! I loved The Jacksons 1981 Triumph album featuring Can you feel it. "Billie Jean" was also out of this world and amazing. And that was the end of it. After that period I couldn't stand Michael Jackson. I wouldn't touch him with a stick. But his death is shocking since he was a big name during my teenage years. His death reminds us of our own mortality. Suddenly instead of hearing about very old people dying, you hear of someone famous during your own generation dying. That is shocking.

Italians Paola e Chiara also performed in Madrid that same day as Gloria Trevi and in comparison they looked so pale and weak. They looked like amateurs compared to a big star like Trevi. Its obvious how powerful italian designer techniques are because in person Paola e Chiara looked quite trashy and nothing as interesting as their carefully desinged record jackets suggest. Very weak. Though one of them did a very cute acapella tribute to Michael Jackson.

The big dissapointment was that puerto rican superstar Olga Tañon did not show up!!! I understand she is a huge star and she should'nt be performing on the same stage as a bunch of whores , transvesties and semi amateur artists like Paola e Chiara. But they should have not listed her in the program if they are not sure she will appear because I lost two hours waiting there to see if miss Merengue would appear.

Instructions: How to find the URL of a Flash file

When you right-click on a flash file as opposed to an image, the menu that gets displayed is a flash-specific menu that gives you no options regarding copying the URL address of the flash file. Many times, like in the case of flash google Ads, the source of the flash file cannot be found in the html source code of the page either as it is something that is generated and not hard coded. If you click on the flash it will take you to the landing page, but that doesn't give you the Url of the source of the flash file. But what can you do when you really want to save the actual flash file in the same way you would want to save an image to your computer.

To download or find the source URL of a flash file you need to use the FireFox browser. Then depending on your language go to the tools menu, then go to Plug-Ins or Ad-ons or Complementos. Now you need to search for a plug-in or extention called FIREBUG and install it.

From there on after restarting FirFox you can start firebug from the tools menu.

Once Firebug is on, you need to click on the element you want to inspect, which in our case could be, for example, a Flash banner .

From Firebug's page divider menu, select inspect element. This will cause Firebug to show in blue highlight the source url of the flash file. Obviously then once you have the URL you can do many things with it.
