Video Location Scouting in Madrid for the clip of my song Atish Bezanesh (Bailatela)
For couple of days now, I have been trying to figure out how to approach the video for my upcoming song آتیش بزنش Atish Bezanesh (Bailatela).
There are two possible ways to do the video. One option is to give it to someone else who has done other videos. The other option is to do it myself hiring the necessary people, such as, the Camera Operator, etc.
I'll talk about that a bit later.
Today I was location scouting for the video. I got out on the street taking pictures of possible locations. The key is that the place has to look very "Spain" . It also has to meet some other technical details, like, few people walking around, large enough space in front, etc..

One common theme in Madrid: It is hard to find a nice monument that is not under construction, or covered up in graffiti. Madrid, the city that is always under construction and can never be enjoyed, thanks to Mr.Vampire, our mayor.
While deciding things for the video of my song Atish Bezanesh, I had to watch some videos. Some videos had to be watched in order to evaluate the camera to be used. Other videos had to be watched in order to evaluate the director of Photography. Other videos had to be watched in order to see what could work for the Persian Diaspora. So this week, I watched the most bizarre clips you can imagine: Korean pop, sexist Persian clips, Catalan female Rap -kid you not!!!!--, and worst of all: An Argentinian Christian music clip which features in most absolute detail the murder of Jesus Christ, with blood and all. See image bellow.
It is challenging working on the video because there are many people involved and when one is responsive, you can't get a hold of the other person and so on.
Finding people is hard. For example, sometimes you might find someone who has great skills with an amazing resume, but they cannot type a proper email.
One option as I said was to give the video to someone else to make. But this option is not working out. You have people wanting to charge a lot, but their demo reel is very poor quality and I know I can do a better job on my own. Then you have directors that are not in Madrid, which would raise the expense a lot due to travel. Then you have directors with potential that cannot write or communicate properly and are a bit rude. For example, a 24 year old with Andalusian accent started his reply to my request for an estimate with these words: "!!!Que Fuerte!! Mira tio..". The guy is really amazing for a 24 year old, but his verbal and written communications are a different story.
Then I had the much more successful and amazing director and illustrator Garbi KW trackback dariointernet.com taking time to respond very nicely to my questions with full detailed explanations and all in the most polite and considerate manner. You are more likely to be successful being polite. Anyway Garbi KW said he is already booked and also there are stylistic issues with his style that wouldn't be a good match for my project right now.

Finished recording my song "Atish Bezanesh (Bailatela)"
The recording was finished September 18, 2010 and I went and celebrated it at the Lucybell concert that night in Parque de Atracciones of Madrid.
Between investigating, writing, arranging, learning studio software and recording it took 7 months along-side my real office day-job.
Mixing is still pending and mastering if I decide to do that is pending too.
The track sounds great and interesting I think.
Despite that, today, I woke up quite depressed because a new stage starts with this track which brings some anxiety: how to make the video and how to promote it. For this one has to interact more with external people and you get the whole range of people from plane rude to nice.

Impressions of Geneva : Too French !!
Madrid, the city I live in, looks as described by someone on Facebook, like a big ugly bus station. Who knows where our taxes go? Home prices are still out of reach to most of us and the employment situation in Spain is one that can be described as abuse of employees. No career planning , no promotions, low pay, etc.
So more than ever I have an eye open, whenever I visit a more civilized town, to see if it is a place I can consider moving to.
Today I had a stopover in Geneva / Geneve Switzerland. Switzerland has a good reputation as a place to work and in terms of housing. So I was curious. I was already in Basel but didn't like it. Back to Geneva, it is true that 6AM on Sunday morning is not the best time to get an impression of a town, but still better than nothing.
Honestly, I didn't like it much. The people are very French there. They can't even count in English. So if you do not speak French you will have a nasty time. It's funny because in Greece I had no trouble but in Geneva I had a hard time even buying at the supermarket. Regarding architecture and historical buildings, Geneva had surprisingly little to offer. I strolled downtown and it looked mainly grey and moody to me. Very few people on the streets as well. Mostly deserted. Must feel very sad in winter.
Here are two pictures in Geneva:

Spent the afternoon in Rethymnon Crete Greece
It is a nice town Rethimnon or Rethymnon half way between Heraklion and Hania. Apart from a completely destroyed fort, it doesn't particularly have anything. However it does have many tiny pedestrian streets cutely paved with ceramic. These streets have an infinite number handicraft stores. It is just pleasant to walk by these little cute streets.
The bus ride to Heraklion is 1:30 hours and tiring.

Dario is in CHANIA - Kriti. No Samaria Gorge After all.
Well, I arrived to CHANIA in Crete this morning. There are too few flights directly to Chania, so my flight was to Heraklion and then I had to take a 3 hour boring bus to Chania (pronounced Hania ). Chania is nice, there is a long walking area or promenade by the sea and it has old buildings and structures.
I was also going to visit the Samaria Gorge, which was one of the attractions that brought me here in the first place. But I've decided against it, because all the tours of it are exactly the same, consisting of a full day, which includes a 7 hour walk through the gorge. That is not lady-like. I can do 3 hours walk but 7 hours under the summer sun and with a tight time schedule is not for me. There is no shorter tour because it is a protected national park and there are no roads.
Below I leave you some pictures I took this morning in Chania. It is hard to take pictures because there are so many overweight German women trying to take pictures that it is unlikely they will give you a break.
Nighttime In Heraklion Crete Greece
I arrived tonight at Heraklion in Crete Greece, though my final destination is Chania for the weekend.
The airport is really small.
The .
It is one of these towns where people eat at outdoor restaurants all night long. It does have historic parts and buildings but few compared to the ugly tourist buildings.
On the stopover at Milans Malpensa airport, I took an hour and visited the town of Novara and met a wonderful Scottish lady artist and architect. The fotos for Novara are on an iphone I bought after the robbery I suffered two weeks ago. But unfortunatelly with anything Apple, you cannot connect pull anything out of it without some software. No access to the harddrive.

Lucybell in Madrid Spain España photo and video Worlds best power pop band
I just got back from seeing Lucybell , probably the worlds best power rock band. It was funny to see their larger than life power drummer smacking the drums on a shaky 3 square meter stage. Amazing.
It is amazing how just three musicians can sound so complete. Claudio Valenzuela has a great ability to change vocal ranges quickly while drummer Cote Foncea is simply a non stop animal on stage. Their songs have been arranged in a way that portrays intimacy even when a massive dose of fuzzed guitars and hard drums start poring in the recording. Lyric wise, they talk about aspects that go way further than the typical rhetoric of rock music. No I love you , I hate you songs. Or come and go songs. Instead lyrics that talk about anxiety, self help and other inspirational topics. For example, their song "Ver El Fin" (See the Ending) starts with these lyrics: "I have to approach hate as an enemy".
As an example of Lucybell's quality, we were unfortunate enough to have to put up with the most unimaginative group from Spain called R*bledos as their opening act. I'm putting the star there instead of the letter o in order to not give them free promotion. A band like R*bledos just shows how backward rock music has become in Spain compared to other countries including latin american countries. And I am a Spaniard. The problem is clear: Zero imagination. Zero. Because of irresponsible radio stations in Spain like Cuarenta Criminales and also Radio 3 and its ridiculous Jesus Ordo-pajero the idea of music in Spain has become "Alcohol-fun" music. Music simply to drink and party and rock and roll a bit, but with ZERO imagination.
What a huge difference when a first class band like Lucybell hit the stage. One goes from stupid alcohol driven rock and roll to hypnotized stage with a band like Lucybell.
Lucybell who's first album is from 1995 started by taking the best of the early 90's rock grunge sound, name it My Bloody Valentine and other shoegazing bands to Smashing PUmpkins and other 90s punk bands. Except Lucybell created their own style from it with more punching vocals and drumming edge and a better and more ample use of intimate landscapes and with a very powerful, almost funk, bass and drum section.
