Lucybell in Madrid Spain España photo and video Worlds best power pop band

Image
Lucybell in Madrid Spain España photo and video Worlds best power pop band I just got back from seeing Lucybell , probably the worlds best power rock band. It was funny to see their larger than life power drummer smacking the drums on a shaky 3 square meter stage. Amazing. It is amazing how just three musicians can sound so complete. Claudio Valenzuela has a great ability to change vocal ranges quickly while drummer Cote Foncea is simply a non stop animal on stage. Their songs have been arranged in a way that portrays intimacy even when a massive dose of fuzzed guitars and hard drums start poring in the recording. Lyric wise, they talk about aspects that go way further than the typical rhetoric of rock music. No I love you , I hate you songs. Or come and go songs. Instead lyrics that talk about anxiety, self help and other inspirational topics. For example, their song "Ver El Fin" (See the Ending) starts with these lyrics: "I have to approach hate as an enemy"....

CERATI - Open Those Eyes Again - Some of my memories of Gustavo Cerati

Image
Cerati - Open Those Eyes Again - Some of my memories of Gustavo Cerati I've decided to put together this post in a hurry, given the horrendous news published today June 16 by Argentina's Clarin Newspaper trackback dariointernet.com regarding the health of Gustavo Cerati Dear Genius Songwriter : I wish you wake up soon and will read this. In 1993 I was living in California and Gustavo had just released an album called "Amor Amarillo". In the latino market there, Spanish Language rock music was still not mainstream and most latino stores concentrated mainly on ballads and Salsa music. Spanish language rock CD's would be released in small quantities and where hard to find. So I went to the store and asked the girl behind the counter for Gustavo Cerati which she had never heard of. Then she asked what I wished she didn't: The title of the LP. A bit embarrassingly I said: "Amor Amarillo". She responded: "What weird names they put ...

Cerati - Horrible news

The next link has a video from CNN mexico where a doctor explains Cerati's unfortunate state: CNN MEX Cerato trackback dariointernet.com The next link is an article where a specialist doctor gives his view on the latest development, and as suspected by many of us, he mentions that Gustavo was operated on too late and that the operation performed in Venezuela should have been done earlier. 60's Beat Black is Black cover in HINDI & as a backing track for El Luis (Flamenco)

Image
60's Beat Black is Black cover in HINDI & as a backing track for El Luis (Flamenco) The 60's hit song "Black is Black" had a notorious rhythm track that everybody can immediately recognize. In this post I present two recordings you may not know that are based on Black is Black. First comes 70's flamenco star El Luis , a very interesting artist born in Galicia Spain, that however grew up in Argentina and finally started his career in Spain. His recording "yo te lo digo cantando" is one of my favorites. However, here we are to talk about another of his hits called Beibe, no huyas mas ( Baby, don't escape anymore). It takes the rhythm track of black is black and delivers on top of it a raw and tough flamenco vocal performance with new melody and lyrics. The recording is from 1977. Las Grecas en Turco ( in Turkish ) !!!! 1975

Image
Las Grecas en Turco ( in Turkish ) !!!! 1975   One of Spain's biggest success stories in modern music was the female duo Las Grecas about which I had written previously here . Their first two LP's from 1974 & 1975 produced by Jose luis de Carlos had heavy metal, psychedlic guitars and drums clashing with the wild voice of Edelina Muñoz Barrull (Tina ) (RIP). I was happily shocked to discover a really amazing vinyl 45rpm ( 45 devir) by a female Turkish artist called Perihan doing a very nice cover version of a Las Grecas song. The original of the song is Negros son tus ojos writer being Muñoz from Las Grecas 1975 second album called Mucho Mas . The title of the turkish version is Nerden Nereye . Larger than life, Gloria Trevi wins over the crowd in Madrid

Image
Larger than life, Gloria Trevi wins over the crowd in Madrid There are definitly artists that are larger than life and out of this planet. Mexico's Gloria Trevi is one of them. She won me over when in the early 90's I saw a clip of a live performance of her at Chile's Viña del Mar festival where she would cry and scream on stage. Last night she performed in Madrid, and her mini-performance was so powerful that she made me feel suddenly alive again. The place was packed and people went absolutely crazy for her. Even those who didn't know who she was quickly realized that she's not an ordinary artist from the pack but a mega semi-god superstar. And look, I've seen many artists on stage, including Michael Jackson who I saw in 1988 during his BAD tour. The concert was at the Vicente Calderon Football stadium. Michael was distant and was not able to establish any connection with the audience. Everything was pre recorded and as soon as he could he fled off...

AL TORO DE LA VIDA voy lidiando ... : Discos BELTER

Image
El TORO de la vida Discos BELTER dariointernet.com Summary : Dolores Vargas La Terremoto Spain is a country that these days is best known for having the highest unemployment rate anywhere in the western hemisphere. A whopping 18%. And thats just the official figure. It is also a country known for its stock of ridiculously expensive empty homes that nobody can afford to buy. ... etc ,... etc.. But back when I was a child, Spain was immediately associated with images of gipsy dressed flamenco dolls a la Lucero Tena and the black bull logo of Osborne Brandy. But most of all there was a brand and a logo that would transport my imagination to Spain immediatelly: B E L T E R . The brand for the Barcelona based record company Discos BELTER . Somewhere, left behind in a drawer in a house I lived where these old 1960s records with the BELTER logo on them. The jackts were thick shiney and stocky. The pictures a bit embarrasing. The music, was not really my cup of tea. But it was a...

Mari Trini - A last goodbye

Image
Mari Trini - A last goodbye On the 30th of April 2009 there will be a mass at the cathedral in Murcia in memory for the great spanish artist Mari Trini . It is a petty but in her own country they don't appreciate her enough. Even after the news of her death they still don't play her songs on the radio and non of her CD's re-entered the spanish top 50 CD sales chart. Somebody -not me- on youTube created a video montage for her song Mira . Released in 1997 as part of her CD Alas de Crystal, it was never played on the radio in Spain. It is so hard to believe the amount of disrespect from Los 40 Principales and other stations in this country. They play whatever garbage by American and UK artists but won't play a masterpiece like this, just because it was performed by a non rock oriented local female artist in her 40s. The song is overwhelming. It makes me cry. I don't know why. Maybe the chord changes, maybe the intervals between the musical notes.. Maybe because ...

Spain's legendary female songwriter and interpreter Mari Trini Passed away.

Image
Legendary songwriter Mari Trini passed away dariointernet.com Summary : Successful author and interpreter of socially conscious songs ... . Morte di Mari Trini So much sad news coming from the world of songwriting. Just few days ago I wrote about another songwriter passing away. Today I was shocked to read that Mari Trini has died at the not so old age of 61. She is one of the greatest songwriters Spain has had. This in Spain's male dominated market of the late 60's and 70's where the only other female singer songwriter was Maria Ostiz. Before her, women in music in Spain were good looking vocalist entertainers that did not have much creative value of their own. She recorded two records in France in the 60s initially. Mari Trini's 1970 LP "Amores" can be considered both in significance and sales as the spanish equivalent of Carole King's "Tapestry" LP. I really admired Mari Trini's songwriting. Many of them were social conscious so...
