Impressions of Geneva : Too French !!

Image
Impressions of Geneva : Too French !! Madrid, the city I live in, looks as described by someone on Facebook, like a big ugly bus station. Who knows where our taxes go? Home prices are still out of reach to most of us and the employment situation in Spain is one that can be described as abuse of employees. No career planning , no promotions, low pay, etc. So more than ever I have an eye open, whenever I visit a more civilized town, to see if it is a place I can consider moving to. Today I had a stopover in Geneva / Geneve Switzerland. Switzerland has a good reputation as a place to work and in terms of housing. So I was curious. I was already in Basel but didn't like it. Back to Geneva, it is true that 6AM on Sunday morning is not the best time to get an impression of a town, but still better than nothing. Honestly, I didn't like it much. The people are very French there. They can't even count in English. So if you do not speak French you will have a nasty time. It...

Thank Goodness: A sigh of relief - No to the Olympics

Image
Thank Goodness: A sigh of relief - No to the Olympics A sigh of relief for many of us Madrileños who were terrorized that our city might become Olympic with all the consequences: Even Higher Home prices already unacessible to most of us, higher taxes to pay for Olympic dept, large bills to pay for unused stadiums and even more crowded streets. NOT FOR ME!! What for? I'm not interested in seeing a bunch of gorillas on steroid invading my city. This was just another example of how out of touch Spanish politicians are with Spain's reality. With half the country unemployed and half the working population unable to afford to buy a basic apartment, they go and spend our taxes on useless stuff like the Olympics. Even as every major international newspaper had warned that it was going to be unlikely a European city would be elected because London is the previous host. But these spanish politicians are so out of touch with real life that I'm sure they don't even read th...

Lots of noise, little substance: Spain's Banks Enter the Real Estate Market

Image
Spain's Banks Enter the Real Estate Market Lots of noise, little substance dariointernet.com Summary : 2009 The Quality of journalism in Spain is rather low if compared with that of journalism in the United States. For example, recently Spain's printed media published front page articles announcing with maximum flair and excitement that Spain's banks have entered the Real Estate Market offering apartments with major discounts . I would think a journalist before writing such garbage, should go and check if what the banks claim is actually happening! But since they didn't bother to check, I did it myself. What I found out was that these Banks overly exaggerate their claims and there is very little truth to their claims. In any case, even if there are discounts , they are on housing that is at a price range that is out of the reach of the typical Spaniard. So they are not solving anyones problems by giving a 30% discount on a property priced at 290,000 Euros....

A big F in Math for Zapatero

Image
A Big F in Math for Zapatero dariointernet.com Summary : May 12 Anti crisis measures announced by Spain's government May 12th 2009 was the debate of the state of the nation in Spain. At this point everyone knows exactly in what state the nation is: total dispare!!! with 4 million unemployed, twice the unemployment rate of any industrial nation, a ridiculous housing market with prices no one can afford, etc.. . This is the real snapshot of Spain . During the debate ZP as he is called over here, announced his measures to pull Spain out of the crisis. I read, and RE-READ the main measure several times to total and absolute disbelief . The main measure is designed to encourage people to buy homes. YOu tell me: What would encourage you to buy a home? . Here I am, having worked since my sophomore year in college and now I am approaching midlife and I still don't own a home. What would encourage me to buy a home is having money in my pocket. A nice measure, would be ...

Real Estate in Spain : Stretching the word beautiful

Image
Real Estate in Spain : Stretching the word beautiful Look at this Real Estate ad for a tiny apartment in Madrid . The ad starts this way: Preciosa buhardilla ... "preciosa" being the spanish word for beautiful .   Now, once you click on the picture it enlarges and this is what it looks enlarged: If you notice anything beautiful about it, let me know, cause I don't see anything beautiful in there. Where is the window??? !!! And the price also stretches the word ridiculous. Obviously the crisis has not gone far enough in Spain. Once they are forced to drop their prices a further 20% then maybe they will recover their sense of modesty a little bit. END Other Articles:

Abjeez : Tu me haces falta + Azulejos Malasaña

Image
There is a real estate crisis in Spain. Lots of people trying to sell or rent, but the prices have hardly dropped yet. They still ask ridiculous amounts. Though thankfully this time around people are saying no. Prices still need to drop a good 30%. Which brings me to this beautiful video by Abjeez called: "Tu me haces falta" :

Electrical Bill Spain 2009: Suit & Tie Robbery

Image
2009 Spain Electrical Bill Pure suit and tie robbery dariointernet.com There have been recent changes to the electrical bill that spaniards receive. Originally the bills were once every two months, but starting February 2009 they are billing once a month. AND they have hiked up the rates officially 15%. That's officially, but in practice it looks like the bill has doubled . Here is my bill for just 1 month usage: It is 78 Euros for just one month. We are talking 78Euros for one month for a tiny studio apartment for a single working person who is not home half the time!!!!! Other people with actually families have received $300 Euro charges. My landlord first announced the amount to me over the phone. Then when she came to collect the money, she goes: "¿Se te ha pasado el disgusto?" ( i.e. Have you gotten over it?.) This is pure suit & tie robbery . These companies executives are the highest paid, then they go asking ...

Animation and Logo Design - Plus: World Homeless World Cup of Football

Image
World Homeless World Cup + Cool Animation and Logo Design updatesdario.blogspot.com Summary : ... In this cold freezing weather we are having in Europe, it is seriously important to think about the homeless . There are way many out there. Way more than official data's go. People dismiss the issue saying.. ..Oh there are shelters , but believe me there are not, particularly where the homeless hang out, which is the center of town. For starters, nobody provides them free transportation to the outskirts, if the shelter is located away from the town center. In October 2005 I was unemployed and desperately looking for work on the internet. Right then, the lady I was renting a room from, decided to switch phone companies, leaving us without internet for a month, which is the ridiculous amount of time it takes in Spain for an operator to start someones internet service. So I had to go with my laptop to one centric plaza in Madrid under a government office to use the WIFI for ...

Y ahora que bajan los precios de la vivienda, los bancos no hacen hipotecas ... / And now they are no longer in the mortgage bussiness

Image
Ahora los bancos no trabajan Hipotecas en España Suddenly Banks in Spain have moved away from the Mortgage bussiness dariointernet.com Summary : Amazing story about banks and the mortgage business in Spain [English] Over a year ago long before this economic crisis, which has dragged the Dow down to the 7,500 level, I did some homework and shopped around for mortgages here in Spain. Imagine all the work and paperwork. Eventually I was pre-approved for 3 of them that I liked. However, I never took any and abandoned my pursuit for any apartment purchase. But I did make a nice list of the banks with the direct phone numbers of the people that actually evaluate the applications. You know, getting those direct numbers is the hard part, because calling the Free customer service number just gets you to some clueless remote tele-operator sitting in Santo Domingo who doesn't even know where Madrid is located. Now get this...! I call one of those desired "direct" numbers...

El iletrado Celestino

Image
